Spring is in the air and apparently vampires, too

posted Tuesday, 15 May 2007

Every spring for a few years now, I’ve looked forward to something besides clear blue skies, leaves on my trees, blooms blooming, and that is getting my greedy little hands on a library copy of the latest Charlaine Harris’s Sookie book.  I came across the series because of AAR’s ATBF on it and since then, my passionate fondness for these books has not lessened.

Thanks to my forwarding thinking library system, I can reserve a copy one month in advance of the book’s published date.  It’s such a thrill to see your name as, say, the 15th out of 50 holds, and one year, I was the 3rd on the hold list.  Sweet.  As much as I love the series, I abhor buying hardbacks, so I usually read the library hardback and then wait for a whole year (much whimpering) to buy the paperback version.

AAR has produced reviews for most of the books, so I’m not going to rehash them here, but I did want to share my thoughts on the men and about whether I think that they deserve the love of Sookie.  So, here’s my spotlight on them, in order of their appearance.

First up, Sam.  Sam is not much taller than Sookie, which pegs him around 5’ 7”.  He doesn’t look muscular but is actually quite strong, as mentioned when he lifts up those heavy cases of liquor.  Sam is kind, loyal, and a very good friend.  He has been there for Sookie in some really tough situations.  In the real world, he’s quite a catch, which therefore means he’s considered boring in fiction, especially compared to the boys coming up later.  However, I liked Sam, really liked Sam, until he dumped a serious amount of brain cells to date that you-know-what.  What was he thinking?  Is this one of the cases of “I was thinking with my lower part of the body, not my higher part?”  So, on a scale of 1 to 5, is he right for Sookie?

My opin:  heartheart1/2

And to further indulge in my love for the Sookie books and to celebrate the release of her latest book, All Together Dead, here are some trivia questions.  No peeking in the books!  However, if you’re reading her newest and/or you have a fiendishly good memory, you might spot/know some answers.  In a couple of days, I’ll blog about the next guy and reveal the answers.  Again, no peeking if you can!

No comment about the vampires, alas, but rather about reserving books at the library. My library allows purchase requests for books published in the next three months, so I do that sometimes. But they also order titles up to 6 or 7 months ahead of time and I'm such a reserve geek, that I'm #1 for many, many titles. If I don't know an author has a new book coming out (rare, but it happens), I search by publisher. I've found a lot of new authors that way.

ooooh Fun! I registered my answers and (ahem) I'm pretty sure I got them all right :)

I love the reserving feature! Unfortunately, the Sookie books were the only ones I remember to reserve. I forgot about the Undead books by Mary Janice Davidson and am #60 on that list. :(

Other extremely popular books being read, which happens to be in hardbacks, are Sugar Daddy by Lisa Kleypas and the latest Simply by Mary Balogh. IIRC, when Slightly Dangerous came to the library, the hardback had 200 holds!

So, Kate, you think you got them right huh? ;) If so, you might be a major Charlaine Harris fan like me. Since I got the hang of setting up these trivia questions, I'll throw in a harder one the next time.

So what does everyone think of Sammy boy?

Ummm, Jeanne, those questions were very easy. You're going to have to work a little harder to stump most of us!

Jeanne: Fun questions....Not sure if I got them all right, but I think I had 3 out of 4...I haven't read the latest book (I really need to get a library card), but I do like Sam...much better than Bill.

I keep thinking Sam might be the one. There's a lot more to him than meets the eye. He shape shifts into a collie because he likes dogs, but he has the ability to shift into any form he wishes, that's a powerful ability--maybe even more so than the Were's. Harris has done a remarkable job with all of the characters. And as much as I do love Sam, I have a soft spot in my heart for the first vampire, dear old Vampire Bill.

I just *knew* when Kate and Sandy read my trivia questions that *they* might think they're too easy. All right, girls, I'll bring out the heavy ammo next time! I had to have a starting difficulty level. <g> I have loved setting up these questions for you all.

Yes, LinnieGayl and SandyO, Sam is very likeable, I still do like him.

SandyO, you stole one of my trivia questions! (Sam being a collie) But it would have been an easy one for fans. Don't worry, I have lots of other Sookie trivia. And everyone, of course, knows the next guy I'll be blogging on Friday will be the dear old Vampire Bill. I'd love to hear other people's opinions on him.

I don't want it to be Sam. Just see their relationship as loving friends rather then lovers (sort of like George and Izzie on Greys!). I was rooting for Quinn and never was a big Eric fan but that all changed with this book. Now I'm thinking I like her with Eric. I wonder if Ms. Harris knows who she wants Sookie to end up with or if she doesn't plan on any of them.
